How to make passwords that are secure and memorable
An online workshop at HelpSpace – Thursday 3 February 2022 – 1 to 3 pm.
Workshop completed.
What is the most frequent, most persistent and most worrying problem reported by digital learners?
- More than anything else — passwords that seem to have gone wrong.
- At the digital drop-in we have seen this every week for at least the last ten years. Sometimes we can find a solution — but often there is no fix, so email accounts, contact lists and important information may be lost forever.
- This workshop is about making sure that never happens to you.
What you could achieve at the online workshop
Learn
- Why passwords are necessary, and how they work;
- The problems that most older learners have with passwords, and how those problems arise.
- How to make a password that is strong enough to resist automated hacking. That is like putting a serious burglar-proof lock on your front door;
- A way to remember your strong passwords. That is like always knowing where your keys are.
- Our list of tips for making safe passwords.
Do
- Follow a way of making a strong password that is also easy to remember.
- Use that method to make at least one really good personal password.
How you can join the online workshop
- No advance sign-up required, but it would be helpful if you tell us that you intend to join. You can do that in an email to workshops@50pd.uk
Where you can find the online workshop
- We will be in our 24/7 virtual meeting room HelpSpace.
- For people who are not quite sure how to function in an online workshop, we will open the room 30 minutes early, at 12:30 pm.
- You do not need to install an app to use the platform.
The tech you will need …
- A reliable internet connection at home.
- A screen that is large enough for you to see presentation slides. A phone screen is not suitable.
- Please wear headphones or earbuds if you have them.
- You will need some paper to write on.
It’s a workshop for learning
- Social interaction is always valuable, but this will be an online learning event.
- Using your camera will be an option.
- Even your microphone will be an option – you don’t have to speak just because you are in the room.
